Laser Surgery for Snoring Relief

There’s a laser surgical procedure to relief snoring called laser assisted uvulopalatopharyngoplasty or LAUP.

Here’s how it works:

The objective of the surgery is to widen your air passage to avoid obstruction during sleep. To widen your airway, the surgeon will use the laser on multiple throat tissues (including uvula and pharynx). Incisions are made on the soft palate of each side of your uvula using C02 laser.

Side effects from LAUP are severe throat pain and scar tissue development which may lead to another snore inducing obstruction in the throat. The former albeit painful, is not really that big of a deal. The real issue lies with the possible development of scar tissue caused by the C02 laser incisions. If a scar tissue forms in the throat, you can bet that another obstruction would occur causing you to snore even louder than before!

According to Wikipedia, presently, laser surgery on pharynx or uvula has not been approved by the American Medical Association.

Stop Snoring Aids

There a ton of stop snoring aids on the market. As usual, some of them work and some don’t. Currently the popular ones are snore prevention mouthpieces, anti snore pillow and pins.  Thinking of buying one of the aforementioned stop snoring aids?

Here’s some brief info about each item…

Pins for snoring –Simply insert a pin into your nose before calling it a night. It is supposed to minimize one’s snoring. Most snoring pins out there look unobtrusive and that’s a good thing. But comfort is another story.  Also, there are plenty of grumbles of pin easily slipping out the nose during sleep.

Mouthpiece –You can easily find one at a local pharmacy.  It may help you reduce snoring problem but I’m not so sure. Like the snoring pin, this item tends to get dislodged rather easily too. Comfort is an issue as you have to keep putting the thing back in position every couple hours or so. Bye-bye blissful sleep!

Anti snore pillow Definitely the best option out there if you manage to find the right type of pillow. There are snoring pillows out there that are so uncomfortable. They are badly designed with waaaay to high neck support which gives you a nasty sore once you wake up in the morning.

Chemical scent is also another problem. There are snoring pillows on the market that have this very odd chemical scent. So you have to be careful about this, otherwise you and your partner will suffer. Imagine sleeping every night with that chemical aroma lingering around. Yuck! I wouldn’t recommend it.

Reasons People Snore When They Sleep

The reasons people snore when they sleep is because of blockage in their air passage. Irregular airflow causes vibration in the throat muscles, and the sound of the vibration is what we called snoring
Now, snoring sufferers are prone to experiencing blockage in the air passage during sleep because of the following reason:

(1) Smoking habit which can severally obstruct the airway one’s throat. And that’s not all. This nasty habit can also affect the strength of one’s throat.

Now, you might be asking, “say what? My throat strength?” What has that got to do with reasons people snore?

Well, that’s reason number (2).

Snoring sufferers usually have weak throat muscles. Their throats close up rather easily when they are asleep so when this happens, the airway gets blocked. And when your airway is obstructed, vibration occurs.

Here’s another reason…

The way you sleep. See, if you sleep with your back flat on the surface, the tongue tends to slip slightly downwards - obstructing your throat in the process. Being on the overweight side can cause snoring as well. That extra body fat tends to surround the area of one’s throat causing irregular air flow which naturally, leads to snoring with capital Z’s!

So, these are some of the causes of snoring and there are many treatments available to combat this problem. Snoring aids are widely available e.g. anti snore pillow, mouthpiece, pills etc. If you want to save money, then you might want to give throat exercises a shot. The exercises are meant to improve the strength of your throat thus minimizing the occurrence of snoring.
